The Nakto Flex is suitable for people who wants the boost of an electric bike for everyday rides in the city without breaking the bank. It is also perfect for those who are choosing their first bike, has limited storage space and appreciates after-sales support.

Nuts and bolts

Nakto Flex is powered by a 350w rear hub motor, which means the bike’s motor is placed on the rear wheel. An advantage of hub motors is that they require little or no maintenance. They are usually ideal for urban rides, commutes, and more accessible off-road leisure rides. This particular motor is much better compared to the one used in Nakto’s folding e-bike (with fat tires) that I got to ride previously. This current version picks up relatively quicker like around half a pedal rotation.

The bike comes with a simple LED display showing the batter level, distance travelled, speed and front light control. There’s a power button to turn on and off, and tow buttons to increase and decrease the assist level.

The Flex also features a removable battery (48v 10AH) which means you can take it off the bike and charge it before your next trip. Charging time is 4–6 hours and based on my experience of riding it on consecutive days within Metro Manila, the battery is pretty efficient meaning it does not easily drop off (in terms of number of lit LED battery life indicator).

How did it go

The Nakto Flex performed well on my city rides. I found the “assist” responsive when I needed it like in stop-and-go traffic situations. But it would take a few practice in safe and slow streets or spaces to be familiarised and comfortable with the decent boost the motor gives. This is crucial when making turning movements with motor vehicle traffic present.

It’s also important to note that the bike (minus the motor) is designed to move with a six-speed drivetrain, which in my opinion, is lacking for a 20" wheeled bicycle. I really think an 8- or even 9-speed gearing hits the spot for small wheels.

Having said that, I think the Nakto Flex presents itself as a good option for anyone who’s looking for an everyday transport tool against a backdrop of consistently increasing fuel costs.

Apart from performance, one will benefit from the accessories that comes with every Flex such as a front suspension fork (for Metro Manila’s notorious road conditions), rear rack (for cargo and pannier bags), integrated front light (for those who tend to forget their bike lights), and chainguard (for those who want a clean pants and skirts going to their destinations).

What do I think

Overall, I had a good experience riding the Nakto Flex. I would certainly suggest it to anyone and will not second guess myself (which I did for a friend who is now enjoying his new e-bike while visiting bookshops, old bridges, and other parts of Metro Manila).

Priced at Php 43,000 at present, I really think the Nakto Flex is worth your savings and will easily pay for itself as you make more trips on this practical and functional e-bike.

Electric bicycles expands one’s range or travel distance without taking away your ability to put in the work just like any other bicycle. And this one surely ticks that box and a few more.

Quick ride for a hair cut
Pedalling to the city market (with assist)
Commuting (cycling to work) on the Nakto Flex
